Impounded by the walls of Mcphee Dam only every few years does mother nature overwhelm the heights of this blockage to allow water to cascade through the red rock and gold walls. Due to limited releases of water from the McPhee reservoir, the Dolores isn’t always runnable. World class scenery and camping on the Dolores. This stretch drops an average of 10 feet per mile with fewer and less difficult rapids than the upper segment, though it still contains several short Class III drops. Ironically, the Dolores River lives up to its name, the “River of Sorrow”. Dolores River: The Dolores River, a great fishing and rafting river, begins to parallel 145 and does so for several miles. This 50 mile segment of the Dolores a true gem and hosts some of the best scenery on the river. Rafting the Dolores River is a special treat that few ever get to experience.
